Pittsburgh Steelers chalk up a memorable 24 point 2nd quarter and a clutch steel wall defense to silence J.J. Watts and the Houston Texans 30-23 on Monday Night Football

The game was billed as J.J. Watts' last national NFL telecast performance for this year. While J.J. Watts would once again put up monster numbers on defense, totaling one sack, one fumble recovery and three tackles, he would be out-shined by fellow #99, Steelers Defensive Tackle Brett Keisel. Keisel would make his mark on the game, as would the fortunate Steelers offense. In an almost improbable barrage of quick Touchdown strikes and shut down defensive play, the Pittsburgh Steelers would, in retrospect, hammer in the nails of the coffin for a Houston Texans team that let this game slip away, one big nail after the other.

ESPN's Scott Brown would explain in his article about Pittsburgh's much needed victory on Monday Night Football, the Steelers could have well changed their season around with a remarkable close to the first half of the game. Brown makes the parable of the likelihood of scoring 21 points in just two minutes of possession at the very end of the half to come back from a ten point disparity would be tantamount to 'cows flying over Heinz Field'. Nevertheless, retrospectively looking at the Steeler's previous two games shows only a touchdown a piece in offensive productivity respectively against the Cleveland Browns and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite a stagnant season and dilapidated offensive efficiency, the Steelers came alive at the end of the first half against the Texans on both sides of the field.

The Steelers' star of the night, Brett Keisel, would come up big via forcing an incompletion on third down from Houston's QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and ensuing punt. Trailing 13-3, Steeler's Ben Roethlisberger (QB)would connect with Martavis Bryant two plays later for a 35 yard touchdown. Another Pittsburgh takeaway would lead to a well developed and equally deceptive 3 yard Antonio Brown TD strike to fellow receiver Lance Moore. Keisel would come up huge with a fortunate interception thanks to a heads up play from Lawrence Timmons. Keisel gave Big Ben great field position to laser in a two yard TD to Le'Veon Bell. Those 21 points and a rare but brilliant burst of Steelers' dominance would prove too much for the Houston Texans, whom never regained the lead after the onslaught.

After the game, many Pittsburgh players appeared notably relieved. Ben Roethlisberger carried a tone of relief and near disbelief while recounting the late second quarter comeback. Brett Keisel, the 36 year old veteran who was resigned (reluctantly) by the Steelers in late August, was quick to dispel the celebration and was quoted on Pittsburgh's struggles and focus after the game, "We can't just win and lose one, win and lose one...We've got to be able to have the same urgency after a win as we have after a loss." While there is a tone of relief in the 4-3 Pittsburgh locker-room, the Steelers are well aware of the trials and battles ahead. Nonetheless, a revitalizing overall performance for the Steelers will create pressure for the Cincinnati Bengals (3-2-1) and the Baltimore Ravens (5-2), respectively second and first in the AFC North. Pittsburgh, currently 3rd in the division, is in a dogfight just to find their way to a playoff spot in the AFC conference. As Scott Brown alludes, despite an uphill battle, improbability can breed positive results, everything seems incredible in retrospect, and right now the Pittsburgh Steelers look back to their formidable former selves.

Australian Rugby Superstar Jarryd Hayne has quit the Parramatta Eels to join NFL next season

The Australian International rugby superstar Jarryd Hayne has quit the National Rugby League (NRL/ RLFC) and his team, the Parramatta Eels, in order to pursue a spot on one of the 32 NFL teams next season. Jarryd Hayne believes he has what it takes to make a formidable punt or kickoff returner and is hopeful for his upcoming NFL debut following the 2014-2015 season. NRL's Jarryd Hayne is a superstar in his own right; he received the NRL's highest award for individual performance this year, the Dally M Medal, for the second time in his career.

In fact, NFL eyes have already been on Hayne. Namely, Reggie Bush who had made favorable statements while commentating on Fox Sports Australia about the 26 years old phenom. Bush commented that Hayne could play in the NFL immediately if he ever decided to switch sports. Indeed, Bush further remarked on the physicality and explosiveness of Hayne:

"He actually looks like an NFL running back. Looks like he could come play with us tomorrow...He's fast, strong and ... wow! Look at that hit. That's an NFL football hit. I like this guy."

Hayne will not be without his fair share of competition and adversity. Statistically speaking, few have made the successful transition from Australian Rugby to the National Football League. Jesse Williams, Defensive Tackle for the Seattle Seahawks (currently on the IR), is one of the few Australian natives to make a name for himself in the NFL. However, Williams also played great smash mouth ball at college football juggernaut program, University of Alabama, and is more in tune to nuances and competitiveness of NFL play. Another Australian rugby hopeful in 2006, Willie Mason, tried out for the New York Jets to no avail. Many other notable Australian rugby players who have made the successful transition are punters in the NFL.

Nevertheless, Hayne, a 6'2" 220 pound speedster, is confident that the time is appropriate to test the waters of the NFL. To play in the NFL is one of Hayne's highest aspirations. Hayne passed up a very respectable large sum contract with the NRL's Parramatta Eels to test his abilities and fulfill his NFL dreams. Hayne's agent, Wayne Beavis, stated that Hayne's speed and power and toughness (Rugby players battle on the field with no pads and no helmets) is the perfect match for a successful NFL showing. While it will most definitely be an uphill battle for the Rugby superstar, Hayne's has the right mindset and optimism about the possibly risky transition:

"I'm so passionate about the challenge that lies ahead for me, not only as an athlete but more so as a person...It's the hardest decision I have ever had to make in my life. I'm leaving my teammates, friends, and most importantly my family; but for me to grow as an athlete and a person I feel this is the right step to take."

Indubitably, Jarryd Hayne and his journey into the NFL will not be without speculation and curiosity regarding what Hayne could bring to the table. For many NFL teams in need a special teams roster boost, Jarryd Hayne with his notably impressive acceleration, moxie and strength, very well could make a revitalizing addition to any NFL roster following this season. Publicity aside, Hayne could be the first great NRL showstopper to create serious waves on the grid iron in pro football.

San Francisco 49ers escape against St. Louis Rams with 31-17 win on Monday Night Football thanks to a stacked offense full of weapons like 'Mr. Dependable' Anquan Boldin

In a division billed as the toughest and best this year for the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers managed another victory on MNF to vie for NFC West superiority. The team the 49ers need to beat, the Arizona Cardinals, is still 4-1. As the 49ers picked up their fourth win of the season, the NFC West division is up for grabs and Colin Kaepernick and company are looking forward to the battle for divisional superiority that looms overhead of their season.

The 49ers showing on Monday Night Football was another offensive clinic for San Francsico's QB Colin Kaepernick. ESPN's San Francisco 49ers reporter Pault Gutierrez remarks on the numerous weapons available to Coach Jim Harbaugh on offense. The argument can be made that Kaepernick's favorite receiver is Michael Crabtree or Vernon Davis as his security Tight End or Brandon Lloyd for an explosive sideline burning of the secondary. The one receiver who has been overlooked is that of Anquan Boldin who had a monster game on Monday Night Football. Boldin would come up huge when needed, especially on a busted play-action from Kaepernick running for his life to a nice impromptu throw to Boldin for the nails in the coffin touchdown to stifle the St. Louis Rams. As Gutierrez explains, Anquan Boldin has been the most dependable back that Kaepernick has at his disposal. Boldin has statistically and repitetively been there to make huge plays when San Fran absolutely needed them most. The same was true last night as Boldin put up nearly 100 yards catching with one touchdown. In fact, the same seems to be true every time Boldin suits up against the Rams, who has a respectable 12-4 win ratio, over 1400+ yards and 6 100+ yard games (receiving) versus the Rams.

Indeed, Kaepernick himself would have a record setting game via his legs. The Kaepernick-Boldin improvised touchdown would be recorded as Colin Kaepernick's sixth NFL touchdown this season while being flushed out of the pocket, those 6 mobile touchdowns are now the NFL record this season, as Kaepernick just surpassed Andrew Luck for the bragging rights. Anquan Boldin had more to say about how well Kaepernick's elusiveness and reads have gotten as he watches this NFL superstar QB further improve and progress:

"It was a broken play...Kap made a play with his legs...Because with a mobile quarterback...things like that are going to happen. … I've seen him do it over and over...His decision-making has improved a lot...He's always been a good leader. He's always been able to make plays with his legs. But his decision-making has really grown in the last two years, the two years I've been here"

Kaepernick had equally high praise of Anquan Boldin who has been dubbed as 'Mr. Dependable' in San Francisco after Monday Night Football play. Kaepernick while regarding his broken play touchdown to Boldin gave credit where credit was due, "He came back and made a great play...He was supposed to be running the other way, saw me scramble. … I'll give Anquan a shot any day of the week." As San Francisco finds more and more playmakers on both sides of the field this season stepping up with huge plays, they will need that deadly 49er offense with 'Mr. Dependable' at the helm for San Francisco' s big challenge next week against the equally dominant Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football.

San Diego Chargers staying classy, but have found greatness in 'winning ugly' on top of AFC West with a 31-28 victory over Oakland Raiders

As ESPN's San Diego Chargers reporter Eric D. Williams explains after analysis of  San Diego play, the Chargers have found a way to win close games, consistently. The Chargers 'ugly wins' have San Diego sitting pretty on top of their division, the AFC West, at 5-1. Despite odds placed against San Diego this season, whom will have to oust Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos to maintain their domain of the AFC West, the Chargers are playing very good ball on both sides of the field. The five game winning streak is due to an ugly win against a win-less Oakland Raiders, whom are under new management with Tony Sparano as Head Coach, the win was an underwhelming performance. Nevertheless, Sand Diego Chargers' playmakers found another dogfight on the gridiron, yet again the Chargers came out on top.

Eric D. Williams accounts for the new found Chargers' success thanks to Phillip Rivers. The San Diego Chargers' QB has had the best numbers for QBR (QB Rating) for several weeks and is simply outplaying all other QBs this season in the NFL. Phillip Rivers current QBR is 87.1, two points higher than division rival Peyton Manning (2nd in QBR). For those who have watched Rivers throw throughout the years, despite his lack luster mechanics while throwing, Rivers can flat out play. Phillip has always boasted a dangerous arm on long balls and has a gunslinger's attitude which usually results in big gains through the air. The one aspect which usually hinders Rivers' effectiveness is himself. Rivers has what some would call Brett Favre syndrome, in that he will rifle a shot against multiple defenders or shutdown corners to make a big play happen, this often times creates a fair amount of interceptions accrued alongside touchdowns in a season for Rivers. Now that may sound harsh until you put the numbers on it, Rivers' career total TDs amount to 236 compared to 106 recorded interceptions, statistically that's a 1 of 2 disparity (thereabouts) which leads to problems for Chargers against higher caliber opponents and playoff aspirations.

Eric D. Williams has noted the heightened level of play from Rivers this season, and why that should worry AFC contenders. During Sunday's game, Rivers would throw for 22 of 34 completions accruing 313 yards with 3 TDs, sacked just once and boasted a very respectable 123.8 passer rating. This excellent performance resulting in victory would see another milestone in that it was also Rivers fifth straight game of a recorded 120+ passer rating, who just passed himself, Johnny Unitas and Kurt Warner for a new NFL record which was previously at just four consecutive games (of 120+ passer rating per game). As for interceptions, Rivers can also boast a 15 TDs to 2 interceptions ratio, much more in form with how well Rivers is playing this season. ESPN has projected only three more interceptions for Rivers this season which (if true) should help the Chargers scrap out more close-shave victories, as is their season's theme.

In the grind out victory in O.Co coliseum, the Chargers were happy to see two of their rookies have monster showings as well. Rookie RB Branden Oliver would put up 100+ yards on 26 carries. The strong game from Oliver would be his second straight game of over 100 yards rushing. Rookie Cornerback, Jason Verret, would come up with the game-sealing interception against a desperate David Carr and the Raiders, still starving for their first win of the season. Many Chargers have noticed a new and deadly Chargers team this season, capable on both sides of play. Eric Weddle, San Diego Chargers Free Safety, simple stated "Last year we would have lost this game." Various Chargers feel that this is a different season with a highly focused team, as Weddle additionally pointed out that despite an ugly win, the team will learn from the mistakes and also learned how resilient of a pro football team San Diego has become. Just ask San Diego Head Coach Mike McCoy, who isn't concerned about how pretty the execution is in realtime as he is with stringing together wins no matter how ugly they are, "The great thing is we found a way to win at the end...That's the only thing that matters in this business, is finding a way every Sunday -- or whatever day we're playing -- to win. It's not always going to be perfect." While the San Diego Chargers are indeed not perfect, the team has consistently outplayed their opponents and have positioned themselves nicely into the ensuing playoff picture for the 2014-2015 season.

Former Chicago Bears GM Jerry Angelo's claim that 'Hundreds of Domestic Violence Cases Ignored' in the past 30 years

More fuel has been added to the growing fire of dissent that is the NFL's persona. The NFL organization is now under fire from former Chicago Bears GM Jerry Angelo who made some heated and controversial statements regarding the NFL's handling of domestic abuse cases throughout the modern era of pro football. Jerry Angelo would state that 'hundreds of domestic violence cases have been ignored' on a consistent basis due to keeping high profile play-makers on the field come Sunday games. The statements made by Jerry Angelo have shed new light on the shady process of covering up misbehavior of pro football athletes. Angelo's statements would see those like former Chicago Bears Head Coach Mike Ditka up in arms, as well as Jerry Angelo himself trying to put his statements in reverse after heated criticism.

The original claims made by Jerry Angelo were due to a USA Today story broke by Josh Peter on Thursday and the quotes from Angelo came from an USA Today sports interview where Angelo's criticism of Rodger Goodell lead him to make the controversial statements. According to Josh Peter's story, Angelo had a change of heart and remorse after witnessing the Ray Rice video. Angelo remarked on Goodell stating that he [Goodell] would never cover anything up but also admitted Goodell looked to be playing by the C.Y.A handbook (Cover Your Ass); Angelo would state in his USA Today Sports interview that Goodell may have his 'priorities a little out of order'. Angelo would make his now infamous, now self professed 'out of context' quote about how hundreds of cases of domestic violence are getting swept up under the rug, alongside with his role in the ugly matter during the interview:

"I made a mistake...I was human. I was part of it. I'm not proud of it...OK, is everybody OK? Yeah. How are they doing? Good. And then we'd just move on. We'd move on...We knew it was wrong…For whatever reason, it just kind of got glossed over. I'm no psychiatrist, so I can't really get into what that part of it is. I'm just telling you how I was. I've got to look at myself first. And I was part of that, but I didn't stand alone...Our business is to win games...We've got to win games, and the commissioner's job is to make sure the credibility of the National Football League is held in the highest esteem. [Regarding Goodell]But to start with that, you have to know who's representing the shield. We got our priorities a little out of order."

This type of quote made by Jerry Angelo certainly seems like he understands his part in the cover ups of violence and of the misconduct of organizations and players alike. Additionally, Angelo had no problems with pointing the finger at himself and Goodell just two days ago. Nevertheless, Jerry Angelo would attempt to retract those statements yesterday while being quoted on CSNChicago.com:

"That ‘hundreds and hundreds’ was taken totally out of context...When I was making a point to this person, I was making a point that over my 31 years in the National Football League I’ve seen a lot of changes. There were hundreds and hundreds of things over those years that I’ve seen that have gotten better. Domestic violence is one of those. There were no hundreds and hundreds [of cases] of domestic violence. I would have no knowledge of that or have any idea how I would authenticate that. . . . That was never the intent of [the writer’s] conversation with me."

Despite Angelo trying to backtrack on now heated words, his statements have found opposition across the board from NFL authorities. The same day of Angelo's quotes, the Chicago Bears released a statement via the Chicago Sun-Times (albeit a vague, aloft and conceited one) in contrast to what Jerry Angelo claimed, "We were surprised by Jerry's comments and do not know what he is referring to." If you thought Angelo's backtrack quote and the Bears organizational stance of moral amnesia on Angelo's words were priceless, then you will most likely love the heated words via former Head Coach Mike Ditka about Angelo while on The Waddle and Silvy ESPN Radio Show:

 "[About Angelo]Gutless...If you didn't do anything about it while running the team, shut up, don't live in the past...why didn't you do something then...[Domestic violence]that was never covered up, never. I didn't know anything about that...maybe somebody having a little bit too much to drink, yeah, we would cover that up once in a while. We would overlook it and that wasn't right either. [Angelo] He's right about the one thing...you want the player playing."

One of the few ESPN commentators/ reporters to cover this story in circumspect was Kieth Olberman on his ESPN show. Olberman boldly stated that even if Jerry Angelo was 'misquoted' he was probably right. While many around the league are questioning Angelo on his statements, it appears the actual hot topic debate of domestic violence was swept under the rug with regards to what Angelo stated. People are more combative of attacking Angelo than adequately dealing with an epidemic of NFL violence and cover-ups. Unfortunately none should be surprised as the consistent action taken around the league is denial and accusatory distractions. Domestic violence, a major issue which could seriously damage the NFL's reputation if this matter is to be consistently swept to the curb in lieu of protecting violent players so that they may stay active come game day and publicly outing legitimate voices of concern on a clearly out of control, recurring problem in pro football.

ESPN Indianapolis Colts reporter Mike Wells on why the Colts 33-28 victory against the Houston Texans isn't just Luck, it's a great supporting cast

ESPN's Indianapolis Colts columnist Mike Wells reported on the solid game displayed by the Colts offense and why the game doesn't belong to Luck but rather his stellar cast of offensive weapons. Although the game was dubbed ' J.J. Watts vs. Luck', the two NFL superstars would take a backseat to the splendor that is the Colt's offense. Respectively, J.J. Watts had another strong showing as the defensive juggernaut he is, as would Luck have a great game through the air. Yet, it was the near franchise record game for Colt's T.Y. Hilton that has Mike Wells noticing the emerging pattern of a Super Bowl caliber team with no egos, only playmakers.

Playmakers for the Colts continually are stepping up, making their presence known and feared, all while staying within the scheme and coordination of a well oiled Colts' offensive. This week it was third year Wideout T.Y. Hilton for the Colts who was the showstopper. T.Y. Hilton would put up monster numbers for the game totaling 9 reception for 223 yards and one touchdown. In fact, Hilton would boast an 147 yards in receptions just in the first quarter, which is the most yards by any Colt since 1991. Hilton was just one yard shy last night of surpassing Raymon Berry's franchise record for receiving yards in a game. Hilton's 33 yard touchdown nearing the end of the game proved to be the nails in the coffin for the Houston Texans. Despite great individual performances, Mike Wells explains that this Colts team, which he believes has the best supporting cast Luck has had the fortune to play with, consists of individual playmakers who collectively understand having big games depends on what defense's are scheming and exploiting those schemes with strong talent varied throughout the Colts' deadly offense.

Wells has seen the type of play exhibited by the Colts and sees a Super Bowl bound team not only wanting control of the AFC South (now one full game ahead of the Texans on top of their division) but to dominate game in and game out. For the last four consecutive wins, Wells has seen the heroes and playmakers be divvied up between huge games from Reggie Wayne (WR), runningbacks Ahmad Bradshaw and Trent Richardson or their respectable smash mouth defense. Last night it was all T.Y. Hilton. As Mike Wells retells, the Colts have only one goal in mind and that's not how many stats they can throw up on the board, but rather how many exploitative favorable match-ups of the defense they can create. The Colts locker-room is cohesive on this philosophy, as Colts' Tight End Coby Fleener explains what makes the Colts such a headache to deal with:

"We've been saying it all year that we're going to do our best and take what teams give us...If that means throwing to T.Y. for 200 yards, we'll do it. If it means running the ball every play, we'll do it. There's no 'can't do' in this offense...There's going to be some nights where you are the main attraction and some nights where you aren't the main attraction...You have to understand it's the team above individuals, and that's how it should be and that's how it is here."

While the Colts may have had a rough two loss start to the season, the game-plan and focus displayed by the Colts should have many fans hopeful and the opposition worried. With a cerebral and selfless leader at QB, Andrew Luck, combined with a sharp and talented class of both offensive and defensive weapons, the Colts are emerging to the archetype of superior NFL play in this 2014-2015 season.

ESPN New Orleans Saints reporter Mike Triplett on the Saints superstar QB Drew Brees' stuggles and up hill battle for the Saints' season

ESPN New Orleans Saints columnist Mike Triplett wrote an interesting piece after last Sunday's game for the Saints. In that article, Triplett is just as concerned about Drew Brees' play as he is hopeful that Drew Brees will be the 'Superman' type QB that the Saints personnel and fans alike have to come to rely on. While Drew Brees managed to throw for two touchdowns with 371 yards through the air on 35 of 57 completion, Mike Triplett is worried about the three interceptions that marred Brees' numbers on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and nearly the game.

Mike Triplett makes an interesting case that Brees nearly threw the Saints' season away on those three picks. Triplett summed up this notion by saying this:

"If the Saints are going to dig themselves out of this rut they're in, they can't just lean on Drew Brees looking kinda, sorta like Drew Brees this season. They need him to find a phone booth during the bye week. They need Superman."

As for Superman, Brees judged himself on those interceptions last Sunday dispassionately. Brees, in the post game interviews, admitted the two interceptions should not have happened. Triplett, on Brees' two forced interceptions, understands that the Saints superstar QB is likened (regarding his QB play) to that of a Brett Farve mentality. For those who have followed Drew Brees stellar play throughout his years on the NFL gridiron, they know the QB has  a high risk, high reward attitude while moving his troops down the field on offense.  As Triplett puts it, Brees has a strong will that he can make the big plays out of thin air; this sentiment never really goes away because Brees, due to his near robotic accuracy with throws, usually makes the big plays that put his Saints on top of grid iron dogfights.

Nevertheless, those who watched the game saw two uncharacteristic bad reads by Brees for interceptions. Another uncharacteristic sight was that of New Orleans Saints Head Coach chewing out Brees on the sidelines for his second interception. Brees was getting pressured and often hit when he was trying to force big throws against the Buccaneers secondary. One of those interceptions lead to a pick-six (on a very under-thrown ball to Saints WR Robert Meachem) and would force Brees and company to fight back from a 31-20 hole in the fourth quarter avoiding a near loss as the Saints won in overtime. Overtime aside, Triplett stated (accurately) that the game should have never gotten out of Brees' control, as the Saints would have had a nice lead and buffer if it were not for those foolish throws.

Furthermore, there has been doubts this season of Brees' arm strength and his ability to rifle in deep ball throws. While Brees and Triplett are against the idea that Brees arm strength is not what it used to be; Brees has struggled this season on the deep ball, according to statistics. While Brees was 2 of 6 on 20+ yards completions on Sunday, his season total is only at 7 of 18 20+ yard completions with one interception and one touchdown. Certainly not Brees-esque numbers on long balls. Although, Triplett states that Brees is still 7 percentile higher than the NFL standard of 31% efficiency on deep balls this season. Despite those who are doubting the QB's arm strength and the numbers placed against Brees, Triplett believes that is simply not the case when you watch the tape of the first four games. Triplett defends his position stating that Brees' arm looked fine and rather the defensive coverages paired with not enough long shots to get into adequate rhythm may be the culprit. Brees is of this assertion as well:

"I think some of the plays that maybe you're familiar with seeing ... we dialed those up, but the coverage is just not giving us those...I would say there's some go routes that I can do a better job throwing. And I think that's just practice and time on task and just kind of getting the feel for that again. But we haven't taken a lot of those shots, and part of that is on me...You certainly want to pose that threat to opposing defenses with, 'Man, those guys can run by you. They can beat you with the underneath passing game. They can run the football. They can do a lot of things that we have to be ready for.' So, yeah, that [deep-ball] element has to come back."

While the 2-3 Saints have a heavy chip on their shoulder this season, they are a team coached by genius Sean Payton with a great set of running-backs and respectable defense with one of the most cerebral QBs in the league. Brees still took hold of his squad like the future Hall of Fame'r he is to bring his Saints back to victory on Sunday. Brees still carried his team well, notably being mistake free, on those first four games of the season. As the New Orleans Saints head to their bye week, they will be looking to get their rhythm back to the Saints' standards of a deadly, multifaceted, feared and revered offense with 'Superman' back in the helm.

ESPN's Minnesota Vikings reporter Ben Goessling on Vikings' Defensive Tackle Tom Johnson's unusual arrest and game status for Sunday against the Detroit Lions

ESPN's Minnesota Vikings reproter Ben Goessling broke a story yesterday on the arrest of Minnesota Vikings' Defensive Tackle Tom Johnson. Tom Johnson was arrested on Sunday morning and charged with the misdemeanors of trespassing and disorderly conduct while having dinner at the Seven Steakhouse in Minnesota. The thirty year old Tom Johnson was then taken to the Hennepin County jail and was shortly released after posting a $78 bond. During the arrest, Tom Johnson was not only pepper sprayed but also hit with a taser gun by Minnesota Police. There has been a fair amount of protest to the events that transpired last Sunday night. This wasn't a case of a high profile NFL player acting rudely like that of Lesean McCoy's (Philadelphia Eagles star RB) twenty cent tip debacle/ social media war. Ben Goessling reveals in his article that Tom Johnson may have been a victim of possible police brutality or at the very least misconduct on behalf of police force which made the arrest.

The article goes on to explain that Tom Johnson was asked to leave during closing time at Seven Steakhouse around 2 A.M. on Sunday morning. All reports made thus far have clearly stated that Tom Johnson wasn't inebriated. Johnson was reportedly told, repetitively, to leave the restaurant. Johnson was at a booth waiting for the restaurant's valet service to bring his vehicle. Johnson inquired as to why other patrons of the restaurant were not asked to leave as well. Johnson was also unaware that he was required to be outside the establishment while waiting for his valet service. When Johnson refused to leave the establishment, an officer hit him with pepper spray. Afterwards, Johnson received a towel and water from security for his pepper-sprayed face; Johnson would also reach out to the security guard and gave money to thank him for his help. The Minnesota defensive lineman would take a picture of the officer who sprayed him and a video (believed to be from Johnson's cell phone) of the event. It was shortly after this time when one of the two off duty police officers began asking for Tom Johnson's identification. The police officer would then strike the cell phone out of the hand of Johnson (who was recording the event). When Johnson bent down to pick up the cell phone, the police officer would strike his arm and hand and then used a taser on the Vikings' DT.

Minnesota Viking Head Coach Mike Zimmer said that Tom Johnson would be on the field and playing for the Vikings game against the Detriot Lions on Sunday. Tom Johnson's lawyer, David Valentini made a statement about the event and possible actions to be taken in the near future:

"You saw the video he took...It sure doesn't seem like he was doing anything wrong. He's not raising his voice. There's nothing wrong with videotaping an officer."

Valentini also stated that he will deal with the criminal aspect of the case, before taking any legal actions against the Minnesota police. Johnson's agent, Bardia Ghahremani, made a statement claiming that the charges against Johnson were baseless. Additionally, Ghahremani stated legal action would be taken after the criminal charges against Tom Johnson were settled.

ESPN Seattle Seahawks reporter Terry Blount on Seahawks win over the Washington Redskins thanks to Russell Wilson's Monday Night Football record breaking game

ESPN Seattle Seahawks reporter Terry Blount was critical on Seahawks play yesterday on Monday Night Football. While Seattle Seahawks would defeat the Washington Redskins 27-17. Nevertheless, Terry Blount was not overly impressed with how the Seahawks played with the grand exception of Seahawks superstar QB Russell Wilson, whom Blount is calling the resident magician of Seattle. Terry Blount states that although the Seahawks edged out a ten point victory, the actual score should have been more like 47-17.

The general consensus of those who watched the game would be to agree with Blount on that sentiment. Blount makes a strong case that the reason the Seahawks won at all is because of Russell Wilson's play on Monday. The report goes on to mention that the offensive line for the Seahawks was dreadful and the numbers agree with Blount. The Seattle O-line looked discombobulated. They missed blocks anyone as an OT (Offensive Tackle) in the NFL could handle. Additionally, the O-line accrued a dreadful amount of penalties during the game. For example, Wilson would hit up his star receiver Percy Harvin (WR) three times for touchdowns only to find a flag on the field each time and an O-lineman guilty of the penalty. In fact, the O-line had three false starts, three holds and one personal foul. Altogether, the Seahawks would total 90 yards on 13 penalties. In contrast, while Seattle had a shaky offense, their defense had an equally impressive showing as Wilson.  Despite a haphazard performance from the rest of the offense, Wilson had a career game indeed. Russell Wilson would throw for 201 yards, completing 18 of 24 throws for two touchdowns and a near impeccable 127.1 QB rating which is a very effective showing through the air. Those numbers, with possibly the exception of only recording 200+ yards, is a near perfect game for any QB. Yet despite a very strong showing by Wilson, the Seahawks nearly lost the game.

The saving grace and game-changer in this electric MNF game was Russell Wilson's legs. Wilson would record over 100 rushing yards as a QB, which is now officially the best recorded rushing performance of any QB to play a Monday night game. Now the other reason Wilson had a great rushing performance is that (inexplicably) the Washington Redskins played man to man coverage nearly the entire game. Many were critical of the defensive play-calling for the Redskins. Those who watched the game would tend to agree. Wilson would eat alive the man coverage (consistently), allowing Wide-outs to clear a nice running lane for Wilson to blow right by Redskin defenders. Even when it looked like Wilson was absolutely dead to rights, he would make the right moves. On one particular third and four, Wilson was bottled up in the backfield but calmly allowed Redskins to converge on him, only for the savvy Seatlle QB to make an excellent lob/ dump pass to Marshawn Lynch for a game-changing 30 yard gain. As Terry Blount accurately summarized, Wilson was making all the right calls and moves even when his team was making very stupid mistakes (that should have cost Seattle the game). Those in Seattle have high praise for their second year superstar QB after the Monday Night Football showing, praise that Russell Wilson not only earned from his stellar play but high praise that he well deserves for keeping Seattle tied (both Seahawks and Cardinals are 3-1)for dominance of the NFC West division.

ESPN Buffalo Bills reporter Mike Rodak on Kyle Orton debut for Bills breaking a 27 game drought to rout the Detriot Lions 17-14

ESPN Buffalo Bills reporter Mike Rodak wrote a piece today in which he believes the Buffalo Bills skid is over. The Bills have broken the two game losing streak when Dan Carpenter (PK) laced a field goal to defeat the Detriot Lions on Sunday. Mike Rodak is equally impressed with negative streaks being broken and career high days for various Bills.

Mike Rodak explains that Bills' leaders stepped up on both sides of the field. Offensively, the debut for Kyle Orton at QB for the Bills went off to a shaky start. Cornerback Reshean Mathis for the Detriot Lions would intercept Kyle Orton early on for a pick-six for the Lions, creating a 14-0 disparity against the Bills at the beginning of the game. Orton would pick up throughout the rest of the drives. Orton would have a Buffalo Bills career game and break a twenty seven long QB drought. As Mike Rodak clarifies, not since the Ryan Fitzpatrick era (27 game long drought) of the Buffalo Bills has a Bills QB thrown for at least 300 yards or more. Orton would have an excellent career game throwing for 308 yards from 30 completions of 42 pass plays attempts through the air.  Despite the early pick-six and the fourteen point hole, the Bills had a stellar game on both sides of the field.

Buffalo Bills Head Coach Doug Marrone benched his star Quarterback, EJ Manuel, earlier on this week, replacing Manuel with Orton. In fact, there has been favorable sentiment towards Kyle Orton's play. Just ask Bills' rookie Wide Receiver Sammy Watkins. Watkins remarked on notable differences between EJ Manuel and Kyle Orton as Orton took the helm this week in practices. Sammy Watkins noticed the favorable differences as he stated that Orton's reads and evaluation were positively different from Manuel, as was Orton's quick releases while throwing the ball. After the game, Watkins had more to say on Orton's performance:

"It carried over a lot...He had his mistakes but he had his veteran time where he lifted us up and moved the ball and had a couple of reads where he saw the coverage and shot it in there...That's just preparation he has in practice. He's got a crazy memory...The way he reads things and the way he studies, it's definitely a veteran move...It's great. As far as EJ making passes, he can do everything Kyle [is] doing...But just the presence and how he leads the group. ... We just have to keep getting better on both sides of the ball."

One of those key reads came up big in the fourth quarter when the Bills trailed 14-12 after an Orton 2 yard strike to the often under-utilized Tight End Chris Gragg. During the two point conversion, Orton successfully read the defense making a quick play adjustment and instead of a pass play, Orton created a nice read for veteran Runningback Fred Jackson to tie the game up with a nice quick run. Fred Jackson, among many other Bills players had equally high praise as Watkins on Kyle Orton's successful Bills debut. While Jackson commented that EJ Manuel could have made the same reads, Fred Jackson was pleased with how Orton lead his team and commanded the offense, especially with calling out plays for advantageous gains on the run and through the air. As Rodak puts it, the numbers don't lie when comparing offensive productivity between EJ Manuel and Kyle Orton. Orton's stellar play would lead to a 34% increase of efficiency in targeting the Bill's cast of Wide Receivers (14 of 21 completions to his wideouts).

While the Bills offense was great, Mike Rodak explained that the Bills defense should not be taken lightly. In fact, the Bills defense has been one of the most consistent weapons for Buffalo. Rodak points out that strong showings the last four games for the defense has lead Buffalo to have the second best run defense in the NFL. The defense only allowed 69 run yards from twenty carries on Sunday. Additionally, Buffalo put up monster numbers against the Lions as the Bills recorded six sacks in the game. Of those six sacks, Bills defensive superstar Marcell Dareus (DT) managed to get half of them. Dareus, who was plagued with off the field issues during training camp, has been having monster games for the Bills. Marcell Dareus was placed with even more pressure this week to be the playmaker on defense as fellow defensive tackle Kyle Williams was out with a knee injury. Dareus can boast a nice five tackle, three sack game and can also be proud of his defense's performance. The Bills defense held the Lions to a scoreless second half which allowed the Bills to come roaring back for the come from behind victory. The Buffalo Bills now have the best record in their division at 3-2, atop of the Patriots (whom had a much needed pick me up win against the unbeaten Bengals). The Bills will hope to add to their lead and effectiveness next Sunday against the Patriots for bragging rights and dominance of the AFC East division.

ESPN's New England Patriot reporter Mike Reiss on the Pats waiving second year WR Kenbrell Thompkins off their roster

It appears the sentiments and analysis of Patriot football play has been reinforced by Bill Belichick and company reforming their offense and special teams to stop the bleeding on a season that is quickly snowballing out of their favor. Many expert eyes have been keen on a very questionable O line lately from New England, they are in need of strengthening their special teams and, as many suspected making adjustments to their core of wide receivers . ESPN's New England Patriot reporter Mike Reiss broke the story today that the Pats have waived former preseason hopeful Kenbrell Thompkins (WR) off the roster.

The move has many around the league scratching their heads. Some are calling the move by Patriot's Head Coach Bill Belichick to be risky. Objectively looking at the holes in the Patriot's play, the move is just the beginning of a soon to be workaround of the roster. Mike Reiss explained that both corner-back Brandon Browner and receiver Brian Tyms are done with their four game suspensions. They were not activated this week but both practiced with the Pats during the week; since they were inactive, they will miss play against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. On Monday, we should be expecting to see both listed on the roster. The waived roster spot of Kenbrell Thompkins will be replaced with linebacker Ja'Gared Davis, who will be replacing the injured Nate Ebner (DB), to fill the void in special teams.

Kenbrell Thompkins removal is a surprising move around the league which is in part due to the celebration from Bill Belichick and Tom Brady during training camp this year. In fact, Thompkins was well respected for his tenuous work ethic. Mike Reiss reinforced these sentiments with high praise from Bill Belichick concerning Thompkins during training camp who described the receiver as very coach-able, attentive and one of the hardest workers on the team. Tom Brady was of the same opinion, as Brady remarked on Thompkins level of play:

"He made some great plays. It’s exciting for a quarterback when you see a guy make those types of efforts and lay out and catch the ball like he did. He’s been doing that since he got here, and he’s another guy who’s put a lot of work in and fought really hard. It’s fun to be out there with him. I have a lot of confidence in him, a lot of trust. He’s a great guy...He works his tail off, so I think that’s one of his best attributes...There is nothing that has ever been given to him, so it’s great to see a competitor like that. And when your guys make plays like that, it just elevates the rest of the team. Not every play are you going to be open by 10 yards. Sometimes you’ve got to lay out and make the play, and that’s how you get to be a great offense. The plays that maybe are a bit unexpected, if you make those, then it just elevates your whole team.”

Yet things have changed for the worse since training camp for the Patriots' season. Brandon LaFell has arisen to be Brady's number one and, one of the few receivers (possibly the only), who hasn't disappointed this season. LaFell's rise unfortunately meant taking Kenbrell Thompkins spot. In the defense of the Patriots' decision, the move makes sense if you know Belichick as the genius he is, who will be reforming the roster to account for every advantage. As of now it is unclear where we will see Thompkins next and the further short term changes coming to the shaky New England Patriot roster.

NFL's Around The NFL Columnist Kevin Patra on Detriot Lions first year Tight End Eric Ebron on being "zombified" by mental wear of the NFL

Kevin Patra of NFL.com's Around The NFL broke an interesting and equally frightening story of comments made by Detriot Lions rookie Tight End Eric Ebron. Ebron was quoted in August about breaking past the expectations and first year boundaries:

"I've already hit my rookie wall...I felt like that last week of the learning process and getting over the curve, that was it for me. Now it's about staying true to who I am and doing everything that got me here, and better."

Ebron had gained more confidence during pre season from big catches via Matthew Stafford's arm. During that preseason, Ebron was insistent to work on the fundamentals and catching the ball securely; earlier on in training camp, Ebron was plagued with dropped passes. Patra stated that Ebron can add to an even deadlier offense this season as the Detriot Lions look to use Ebron as a seam and in-line position slot threat. However, it appears that after four weeks of adjusting to roles and responsibilities at the tight end position has taken its mental toll already. This is what Eric Ebron said to the Detriot Free Press yesterday which has caused concern for the Tight End. Eric Ebron was quoted as saying this about the harsh mental aspect of the NFl:

"You start to get zombified sooner or later...I don't even know if zombified is a word, but you just turn into a zombie mentally. But you're there physically. Oh, your body's going to work, but your brain just stops...if it's going to come, it's going to come...if I hit it, I hit it, but I'm going to go through headfirst, so we'll see what happens after I hit it. If I die, I die. If I come out alive, I come out alive."

Detriot Lions have been expecting more from Ebron as of late. During Ebron's first three games he saw a total of twenty three snaps. Ebron would see eleven more snaps than those first three games combined in week four. This increase was due to fellow Detriot Lion TE Joeseph Fauria, who injured his ankle (due to chasing a peeing puppy). As Patra explains, Detriot Lions will be looking to first year TE Ebron increasingly more. Patra is worried that this increase in productivity and role for Ebron will not leave him 'zombified' on the grid iron or in the red zone. While Patra may have made a joke about the matter, it is troubling to see the uglier side of pro football when it comes to meeting ridiculously high expectations from the world around. As ESPN's Dan Le Batard was concerned about the physicality of the NFL with regards to brain injuries, there should be awareness on the effects caused by the mental stress exhibitted by NFL players in tandem. While it may be easier to brush this off as off-hand humor, various former NFL players from around the grid iron have also made similar remarks in context to the aggressive-reactionary mindset that is often encouraged due to the extremely competitive and physical level of play found in pro football. Who knows? Maybe the stresses placed against pro footballers from NFL exposure and play is indeed a 'zombifying' experience.

ESPN Senior NFL Analyst Chris Mortensen on status of San Francisco 49'ers Ray McDonald Domestic Violence Case

ESPN Senior NFL Analyst Chris Mortensen articled the status of the pending legal action facing San Francisco 49ers Defensive End Ray McDonald last sunday. According to Santa Clara District Attorney's office, Ray McDonald was arrested on August 31st. McDonald was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence while celebrating his 30th birthday at his house with fellow 49er teammates and various friends and acquantices. McDonald lives at the home with his fiancee. An unidentified woman was alleged to have been physically hurt by McDonald. Santa Clara Police stated that the alledged woman had "visible injuries". At this time two court hearings have been delayed.

According to Mortensen's sources, Harbough and company are prepared to discipline McDonald with a possible termination of contract or a suspension. Mcdonald has still been training and playing with the team since the incident. In fact, last sunday was the fourth start for McDonald since the charges were filed. League sources also claim that Jed York, President of the San Francisco 49ers, and Trent Baalke, 49er General Manager, have been insistent that they will honor 'due process' regarding McDonald's case. San Francisco representatives have been in coordination and communication with the NFL on the case. Thus, it seems all parties involved will be waiting for new evidence or information to come forth via Santa Clara Police and Santa Clara District Attorney findings, as one of Mortensen's sources expressed. Santa Clara District Attorney office also announced, "Prosecutors will review, decide whether or not to file criminal charges, or seek further investigation," after the DA office received the case.

Chris Mortensen furthered explained that even as 'due process' will be honored, there is concern for McDonald. Any evidence or information which is released by the investigation that is deemed 'damaging' could actually result in action taken against McDonald without waiting for a possible conviction. As it seems, if these finding are found to be verifiable in the League's eyes then San Francisco 49ers management would carry out possible termination of contract or suspension. Apparently, everyone including the NFL and the 49ers are waiting on the Santa Calra DA's investigation into the matter, which they stated had begun yesterday following a tweet on their twitter account. Mortensen's sources state the key will be the specificity of information released and how damning that information to be. At this time, there is no announcement from San Francisco that Ray McDonald will be punished or benched for the upcoming games. The very nature of this faux pas will most likely have a negative impact on the San Francisco locker-room and no fellow teammates have verbally outted McDonald either as of yet. While San Francisco has been playing great ball on the grid iron, this off the field issue could be building into a masthead in the coming weeks. That is a distraction a very disciplined and focused group of 49ers clearly want to avoid, but waiting on the issue to rear its ugly head further may backfire on San Francisco management of the domestic violence case.

ESPN Dallas Columnists Calvin Watkins and Todd Archer on more legal woes for The Dallas Cowboys as C.J. Spillman (Dallas Cowboys DB) is under investigation for Sexual Assault claim

ESPN columnists Calvin Watkins and Todd Archer broke the story today on an investigation underway  by Grapevine, Texas police. Barry Bowling, Grapvine Police spokesperson, stated that a report was filed on September 20th where C.J. Spillman is under investigation but made clear that Spillman hasn't been charged or arrested. Additionally, Spillman is said to be fully cooperating with the investigation. The incident involves C.J Spillman whom alledgedly sexually assaulted an individual, who's identity has yet to be released, at the Gaylord Hotel. Cowboys players and personnell stay at the Gaylord hotel until suitable apartments are found which was the case with Spillman.

Attorney for the unknown client is Gloria Allred whom has been in communication with Jeff Pash, Executive Vice President of the NFL, since last week. At that time she had named no players or an organization as of yet. While Pash invited the Allred's client to an interview, he made it clear that he wanted the interview be done with NFL investigators and on a 'confidential' basis. Pash is apparently nervous about the type of interview, due to the story being leaked earlier in the week, as he made a comment on the subject:

 "The fact that you chose to make public your requests to interview our client confidentially causes us concern about whether the interview itself would be kept confidential or tweeted out by you as you did with your letter to me," (Referring to an Allred letter to Jeff Pash)"However, I am willing to meet with you to discuss your request and also to learn the answers to our important questions posed in my original letter to you (which was not shared with the press)."

Jason Garret, Dallas Cowboys Head Coach, has become more vocal on the issue of off-field behavior and domestic violence also. Earlier in the week he made remarks on the hot button issues:

 "Again, part of what our jobs are as coaches is to create the right environment for our players to function both on and off the field. So we need to be clear about where we are, we need to be clear that we have a structure in place to help anybody who has any off-the-field issues. Me as a coach, position coaches, player programs, departments, we have a lot of resources here to help guys. So that was the first message -- if you're dealing with anything off the field and we can help with, we're here for you. In ironically bad timing Dallas Cowboys news, Josh Brent (Dallas Cowboys Defensive Tackle) has returned to the team this week. Brent was found guilty of intoxication manslaughter, an incident which lead to the death of Brent's best friend and practice squad player, Jerry Brown. Brent will not be able to play until the 10th week but has been allowed to begin working out with the Cowboys in the meantime.
